How to sell digital products on Shopify
Shopify doesn’t support digital downloads out of the box. Fileflare adds instant delivery, download protection, and a branded customer experience — in about five minutes.
Why sell digital products on Shopify?
Shopify powers millions of stores — but most people think of it as a platform for physical goods. It’s just as strong for digital. You get a world-class checkout, built-in payments, and a storefront that works on every device.
High margins, zero inventory
Create once, sell forever. No warehouses, no shipping labels, no restocking. Every sale after the first is almost pure profit.
Instant delivery
Customers get their files the moment they pay — no wait, no tracking numbers. Orders fulfill themselves while you sleep.
Sell alongside physical products
Already have a Shopify store? Add digital products to your existing catalog. Customers can buy physical and digital items in the same cart.

How to set it up
You can go from zero to selling digital products in about five minutes. Here’s the full process.
1
Create your Shopify store
If you don’t have one yet, sign up at shopify.com. Shopify’s free trial gives you enough time to set up your store and test everything before you pay. Pick a theme, add your logo, and configure your payment settings.
2
Add your products
Create products in Shopify just like you would for physical goods. Add a title, description, images, and price. For digital products, uncheck “This is a physical product” in the Shipping section so Shopify skips shipping at checkout.
3
Install Fileflare
Grab Fileflare from the Shopify App Store and follow the onboarding checklist. It takes about two minutes — connect your store, choose your settings, and you’re ready to attach files.
4
Upload files and attach them to products
Upload your files to Fileflare’s asset library, then attach them to the products you created. You can attach multiple files per product, use different files per variant, or bulk-attach files across your catalog with a CSV import.
5
Customize the experience
Set up your branded download page, customize delivery emails, and configure access controls like download limits or order expiration. Fileflare handles the rest — when a customer buys, they get their files instantly.
What Fileflare gives you
Shopify doesn’t include digital delivery. Fileflare fills that gap — and goes well beyond basic file hosting.
Instant delivery
Files are delivered automatically when an order is fulfilled — via email, the thank-you page, or a branded download page on your store.
Branded download page
Customers download from a page on your domain — not a third-party site. Customize the heading, layout, and consent gate.
In-browser streaming
Videos, audio, and PDFs can be viewed directly on the download page. Customers don’t need to download anything to start consuming.
Download protection
Set download limits, IP restrictions, and order expiration. Automatically block access on fraud-flagged orders.
PDF stamping
Watermark PDFs at download time with the buyer’s name, email, or order number. Lock printing & annotation for extra protection.
Custom emails
Fully customize delivery emails — subject line, body, button style. Send from your own domain with custom SMTP or SendGrid.
Frequently asked questions

You can set up and test everything on Shopify’s free trial. To start accepting real orders, you’ll need at least the Basic Shopify plan. Fileflare itself has a free tier to get you started!
Any file type. PDFs, ZIPs, MP3s, MP4s, PSD files, font files — if you can upload it, you can sell it. There’s also in-browser streaming for video, audio, and PDF files, so customers can start using your content without downloading.
When an order is fulfilled, customers receive a delivery email with a link to their branded download page. They can also access downloads from the Shopify thank-you page and their customer account. You control which of these channels are active.
Fileflare gives you several layers of protection. You can set download limits per order, restrict downloads to a set number of IP addresses, expire access after a certain number of days, and stamp PDFs with the buyer’s name. Orders flagged for fraud are automatically blocked.
Yes. Fileflare can import your historical Shopify orders so existing customers get access to their digital purchases. It creates download links on demand as customers view their order or download page.
